Phnom Penh

A 3 hour mini bus journey (yes, we’re still the oldest) and we arrive in Phnom Penh. Having heard various accounts of how unsafe the city is we are a little apprehensive to say the least, but can honestly say that at no point did we feel uncomfortable. With a little common sense we happily explored the city on foot and found everybody to be friendly and helpful.

It is a city of contrasts, on the banks of the mighty Mekong boasting the Royal Palace, Raffles Hotel, bustling markets & French architecture as well as the Tuol Sleng Memorial, the site of the S-21 Khmer torture prison. All fascinating in their own right, it was both an educational and humbling experience.

Phnom Penh also gave Wayne a chance for a bit of maintenance!

A short trip by tuk-tuk takes you to the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, a macabre ‘must do’. A fascinating and moving experience. Enough said.

Whilst we wouldn’t necessarily take in all of these sights again we are looking forward to a return visit to PP, it’s a great hub for onward travel as well a fascinating city.

Next stop Vietnam!!
